Investigating tradeoffs in nitrogen loss pathways using an environmental damage cost framework

چکیده
Few studies have addressed whether in-field practices to reduce nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) leaching might increase nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, which could undermine attempts mitigate agricultural N pollution. Over a 3-year period, we assessed the impacts of application timing and cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop on subsurface drainage NO3-N N2O emissions quantify changes in total loss corresponding social environmental damage costs under continuous corn (Zea mays L.). While losses were reduced by 37% with combination in-season split relative pre-season application, soil increased 26%, highlighting tradeoff between pathways. As result, from each system not different. These results demonstrate importance addressing pollution using holistic framework accounting for risks both emissions.

Selection Maintains Apparently Degenerate Metabolic Pathways due to Tradeoffs in Using Methylamine for Carbon versus Nitrogen
Microorganisms often encode multiple non-orthologous metabolic modules that catalyze the same reaction. However, little experimental evidence actually demonstrates a selective basis for metabolic degeneracy. Many methylotrophs-microorganisms that grow on reduced single-carbon compounds-like Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 encode two routes for methylamine oxidation: the periplasmic methylamine ...
متن کاملCost Analysis and Tradeoffs in Regression Testing using FSMWeb
Web applications have become software commodities of choice due to advances in internet, and wireless communications. Web applications need to be tested during new development, and thereafter during maintenance when presented with changes. Models can be used to represent the desired behavior or to represent the desired testing strategies and testing environment. FSMWeb is a black box model-base...
متن کاملFundamental Limits and Tradeoffs in Autocatalytic Pathways
This paper develops some basic principles to study autocatalytic networks and exploit their structural properties in order to characterize their inherent fundamental limits and tradeoffs. In a dynamical system with autocatalytic structure, the system’s output is necessary to catalyze its own production. We consider a simplified model of Glycolysis pathway as our motivating application. First, t...
متن کاملUnicast Routing: Cost-Performance Tradeoffs
The objective of unicast routing is to find a path from a source to a destination. Conventional routing has been used mainly to provide connectivity. It lacks the ability to provide any kind of service guarantees and smart usage of network resources. Improving performance is possible by being aware of both traffic characteristics and current available resources. This paper surveys a range of ro...
